Caesarean Sections

Caesarean sections (C-sections) are sometimes necessary to ensure the health and safety of both the mother and her puppies during whelping. At McLaren Vale Veterinary Surgery, we have a highly trained team of Vets and Nurses to help provide the best outcomes for you and your puppies. There are several reasons a caesarean may be performed:

  • Elective Caesareans – we perform many elective caesareans. We do this for certain breeds who may have difficulty delivering naturally, including Chihuahuas, Bulldogs or Boston Terriers. We may also do this for bitches who have had difficulties or complications delivering in the past. Our in-house progesterone testing, as well as ultrasound assessment of the puppies allows us to accurately determine the best time to perform these Caesareans.
  • Difficult Labour (Dystocia) – Obstructions may occur during whelping, or the bitch may fail to contract properly and deliver the puppies. In the event of a difficult labour, please contact our clinic immediately on 83238522 so our team can help you provide the safest outcome for your bitch and her puppies.

If you would like to organise an elective caesarean, or believe your bitch is having difficulties whelping, please contact McLaren Vale Veterinary Surgery on 8323 8522.
