Preparing Your Pet for an Ultrasound

To ensure a successful and stress-free ultrasound procedure, please follow these important steps:

  1. Fasting Instructions
Do not feed your pet after 8 pm the night before their procedure. Fasting is crucial as a full stomach can obstruct the imaging of organs around the stomach area (e.g., liver, adrenals). Water is permitted.

  2. Bladder Preparation
If possible, avoid letting your pet urinate within 3 hours before their study. However, do not worry if they do! A full or partially full bladder helps in obtaining a complete examination.

  3. Sedation Information
Your pet will likely need to be sedated for the ultrasound. This helps in achieving a detailed examination as your pet will remain calm and still. The procedure is not painful but can be slightly uncomfortable due to the pressure from the ultrasound probe. If you have any concerns about sedation, please discuss them with the vet.

  4. Medication Guidelines
If your pet is on any medication and you are unsure whether it should be given on the day of the procedure, please contact our office for advice.

  5. Clipping of fur
Be aware that your pet will be clipped for the ultrasound examination. For a full abdominal ultrasound, a large area underneath your pet may need to be shaved. If you have any concerns about this, please talk to the vet or nurse.
